3 Ways to Access Your Inner Entrepreneur

Can you be an entrepreneur if you don’t “own your own business?”

Entrepreneur and business owner are often linked but they are not synonymous. You have the power to see something or imagine something and make it happen. You have the ability to create something that doesn’t exist. You have an inner entrepreneur.

Three ways to access your inner entrepreneur include:

  1. Take resources from a lower level of productivity to a higher level of productivity, value and usefulness (this comes from Peter Drucker’s explanation of an entrepreneur, which inspired us). You create the future out of resources, out of capabilities and out of your imagination. It sounds grand and other-worldly, but you do this all the time. Whether you are making dinner, creating a PowerPoint presentation or imagining how to solve a problem, you are accessing your inner entrepreneur.
  1. Use your drive to go for the impossible.  Small children have a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them. As we grow up, we learn to stop listening to this voice. Have you ever heard a story about someone’s impossible dream and thought, “that’s crazy”? From Elon Musk and Richard Branson in the business sector to a countless number of people who have changed the world like Mother Theresa and Nelson Mandela, they dreamed big and made amazing things happen. There’s a saying, “if your dreams don’t scare you, then they’re not big enough.” If you have lost touch with your dreams, perhaps it’s time to get reacquainted.
  1. Set goals to grow, achieve and succeed. Carol Dweck’s research about the difference between growth mindset and fixed mindset is often referenced as a leverage point for success. A growth mindset coupled with goals is a key way to access the inner entrepreneur.

How does this align with or challenge your definition of an entrepreneur? Every day you create things that didn’t previously exist. Where are you moving resources from a lower level of productivity to a higher level of productivity, value and usefulness? You have the power to imagine something and make it happen. Use your power wisely.
