We wish you peace, joy and prosperity throughout the coming year.
Have you considered where joy comes from? We believe that joy is foundational to your true being and comes from within. We define happiness as something that is externally driven and is a reaction to an experience or external circumstances. Happiness is fleeting while joy is ever present if you keep your bucket full!
Here are a few ways you can fill your joy bucket:
- Random Acts…of Kindness – research repeatedly shows that when you do something kind for someone else, the benefit extends to you. 95% of people feel good when they help someone, 53% of people feel happier and more optimistic, and those feelings last hours or even days for 81% of people.
Here’s a great TED talk from Botlhale Tshetlo on the impact of her 38 random acts of kindness for her 38th birthday. In just 8 minutes, learn how she gave away “a happy piece of me.”
- Make Time For You – When we heard Melinda Gates present at the Leadership Summit in August, we were impressed by how intentionally she manages her time and energy. When she returns from traveling internationally she builds in a day of recovery. This was further illustrated in a recent interview:
“Our co-trustee, Warren Buffett, said to me, ‘Remember, Melinda. You’re taking on the problems that society has left behind, and they’ve left them behind because they’re hard problems.’ And it just reminded me that I have to take that time to fill my own joy bucket if I’m going to be good at this work. I build in 15-minute breaks so that I can take some quiet time and close on one meeting before I go to the next. I’m a big believer in taking time to pause and reflect, particularly when you’re working on some of the big challenges in the world.”
As you face the remaining eleven days of the year, we hope that you make time to fill your joy bucket by spreading kindness or making time for yourself.
We are looking forward to 2017 and sharing breakthrough thinking on leadership, change and culture.
