How Do You Find Room for Your Big Rocks?

(we said big rocks, not pet rocks!)
Do you remember the book “7 Habits of Highly Successful People?” This is where we first heard the concept of big rocks as the most important things that need done.
The idea behind the concept of the big rocks is that we all have a finite amount of time. If we fill up our limited time with inconsequential things, then there will never be enough time to get the most important things done.
Make time for what is most important to you because you will never “have time.” Here’s a comical video that explains the concept.
In the final month of 2016, it’s a great time to evaluate your year. Did you do what matters most to you? How you are going to ensure that you make time for “your big rocks” during 2017.
Tips on finding time for Your Big Rocks

  1. Define Success and Purpose – dream big but dream your own dreams, don’t borrow others. Whether it is a project you are working on or a change you want to make or your life, you need to define success. What is the outcome or what does success look like? Then define purpose. Purpose is the reason or the “why” behind the success.
  2. What Matters Most – this is essential to success. Not doing everything is ok. You can say no. Once you are clear on your definition of success and purpose you have something to guide you as you evaluate all the options of what you could do. What matters most are the beliefs, behaviors and actions that lead to success. What matters most = your big rocks.
  3. Block Your Schedule – did you realize that you can tell someone’s priorities by looking at their calendar? Where you spend your time, defines who you become and what gets done. Put the big rocks in first and you’ll see where there is time to fit in the pebbles. This is important to do each day.We are dedicating the last week of 2016 to review our strategy, our goals and get clear on success/purpose. Then we will put the big rocks where they belong in 2017 so time is reserved on our calendar. That is our guard against the distractions, disruptions and derailers that will attempt to take us off focus!

Remember that what gets scheduled gets done and what doesn’t get scheduled doesn’t get done. Make time for what matters most.
